Annual reviews, teaching portfolios & the emergence of a new issue Jenny Preece November 2009
2
Aims of mentoring & annual reviews Help you to prepare for 3-year contract renewal and ultimately for tenure To provide early feedback so you can: – Develop strong research and teaching statements – Develop strong portfolios of research, teaching and service – Provide information for mentee and mentor to work on together Ensure that everyone is treated as fairly as possible
3
Annual review process 1Assistant Professor submits dossier for review 2Tenured faculty review, meet & discuss 3Dean rereads everything in dossier and checks on development of teaching portfolio 4Dean drafts report 5Dean circulates to tenured faculty for comments (& to Associate Dean) 6Dean edits report based on comments 7Report sent to Assistant Professor 8Copy sent to mentor, other tenured faculty, & placed in personnel file 9Assistant Professors meet with Dean and mentor 10Assistant Professors may also meet with other tenured faculty and Associate Dean
4
Teaching load & portfolio 3 courses in first year 2:2 load (4 courses per year) after first year Teach a fifth course during years 3, 4, or 5 Establish a portfolio of courses We attempt to be as fair as possible taking into account individual differences in expertise & the iSchool’s class schedule needs
5
Standard teaching portfolio 4 different 3-credit courses or equivalent – At least one core or required course – At least one course should be new or substantially redesigned by you Mentoring Masters students Encourage but do not mandate: – Mentoring Doctoral students – Serving on Doctoral student committees – Offering independent studies to Masters and Doctoral students
6
Things we check to be fair, things we like to see & a new issue Share 3-credit and 1-credit doctoral seminars around different faculty Teaching 1-credit course 3 times = 3-credit course Take into account split appointments (e.g., with UMIACS, English, and soon Education) You teach in the areas you agreed to teach in when hired! Collegial and help when you can (e.g., times, days, location)
7
The new issue … Growth of the MIM program Too many required capstone INFM 737 & team projects INFM 736 for Vedat & Stephen Thanks to all who are helping Now need to distribute across faculty Can be in place of a fourth course Determine numbers of students and projects for each that are equivalent to a 3-credit course
8
3-credit course equivalent … Based on discussion with people currently teaching team projects and capstones the following are thought to be a fair equivalent of a 3-credit course when taught on load: – 10 capstone projects INFM 737 – 4 team (12-16 students) experiences INFM 736
