P3 1.2 AQA Science © Nelson Thornes Ltd 2006 2 Outcomes All MUST be able to describe what a hydraulic system is. MOST SHOULD be able to use the equation for pressure in a hydraulic system. SOME COULD relate hydraulic systems to the conservation of energy and work done.

P3 1.2 Definition: Hydraulics is the use of pressure in liquids. To understand hydraulics, last lesson we wentthrough what pressure is. Pressure is the Force per Unit Area. P3 1.2 Stand up Sit Down – ALL STAND UP. DO NOT SAY ANYTHING. ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS IN YOUR HEAD. WHEN YOU CAN’T ANSWER – SIT DOWN What is pressure? What is the unit of pressure? What is a hydraulic system? Why are hydraulic systems sometimes called force multipliers? Look at the simple hydraulic system below and explain how it produces an output force. Explain how even though a small input force can provide a large output force in a hydraulic system, the law of conservation of energy is not broken.
