Types of Chemical Reactions
2
How would YOU describe what is happening in the following generic reactions?
If you were to name these types of reactions based on what is happening, how would YOU name them?
3
Types of Chemical Reactions
Most chemical reactions that we will experience follow the general formats that you just described These 4 main types are known as: Decomposition Double-Displacement Single-Displacement Synthesis Based on your descriptions, match up the type of reaction with what you think is the actual name synthesis ______________________ decomposition single-displacement double-displacement
4
Synthesis Reaction (Combination)
Two or more substances combine to form a new, more complex substance General Form: A + B AB Example: 2Na + Cl2 2NaCl
5
Decomposition Reaction
A complex substance breaks down into two or more simpler substances General Form: AB A + B Example: 2H2O 2H2 + O2
6
Single-Displacement Reaction (Single-Replacement)
An uncombined element replaces an element that is part of a compound General Form: A + BX AX + B Example: 2Na + 2HOH 2NaOH + H2
7
Double-Displacement Reaction (Double-Replacement)
The positive ion of one compound replaces the positive ion of the other compound to form 2 new compounds General Form: AX + BY AY + BX Example: MgCO3 + 2HCl MgCl2 + H2CO3

Practice Balance the chemical equation if necessary. (What law is this?) List the type of reaction that is occurring.
