2 Passive voice Main subject not completing the action. Doer is to at top of sentence.  The ball was thrown by the boy. (passive)  The boy threw the ball. (active)  DEAD VERBS  TO BE (VERBS)  Am/Are/Be/Is/Was/Were/Been  Others  Had/Have/Has/Got  Feels/Looks/Sounds/Smells/Acts

3 Adds details Must place adjectives in front of nouns(subjects) and vivid verbs replace lower level verbs.  Vivid verb – shows something(eat – devour)(walk – stroll)(laugh – giggle) (run – dart)  Sensory details(before the noun) SOUND WORDS - Hanging,croaking, laughing, ringing, tinkling, barking, crunching, moaning, rumbling, thudding (many end in –ing) TOUCH WORDS – Abrasive, feathery, knobbed, sandy, spongy, biting, lacy, scalding, steamy TASTE AND SMELL WORDS – Acid, doughy, minty, rank, sweaty, acidic, earthy, moist, raw, sweet SIGHT WORDS – Enormous, miniature, towering, bright, blurred, glistening, radiant, shimmering The cabin was cozy. (dead/passive) The cozy cabin sat silently in the shimmering woods.(active/detailed)

4 Beware of the –ing curse -ing can be added to your adjectives, but not your verbs. Strolling down the path.(Not a complete sentence) (Missing subject) I strolling down the path. (Not correct grammar) Burning leaves evaporate with a blink of an eye.  Adjectives okay for –ing.

5 Maps Use circle map to collect your nouns(which become your subjects) Use a double bubble map to collect your vivid verbs and sensory adjectives. Create you active voice sentence. These are great for opening lines in essays. (attention grabbers)

6 Change from passive sentence to active paragraph The forest was changing.(passive sentence) Active paragraph: I ____ silently down the path. The crisp, orange yellow leaves ______ beneath my footsteps. The sun faintly _____ through the ____ trees. The harsh wind _____ through the branches as acorns ____ to the ground. ____ squirrels _______ along the _____ path for they know they must ____ their food quickly since the ______ winter is on its way. I _____ the ____ sound of a _____ creek in the distance. As I continue on my journey, winter slowly ______ up. Autumn days ____ shorter and _____ away.

7 Completed I stroll silently down the path. The crisp orange yellow leaves crunch beneath my footsteps. The sun faintly illuminates through the congested trees. The harsh wind whistles through the branches as the acorns plummet to the ground. Tiny squirrels scurry along the uncharted path for they know they must gather their food quickly since the unforgiving winter is on its way. I detect the faint sound of a little creek in the distance. As I continue on my journey, winter slowly creeps up. Autumn days grow shorter and fade away.
