The first step is easy! Just start thinking about things you are curious about! A good example of brainstorming questions are… “I wonder what the average height of a basketball player is.” or “I wonder how many families in the U.S. have a dog as a pet.”

When looking up data online, remember to use reliable sources. Examples: CIA Factbook TalkStats.com Pick your data source, then try your best to focus on the stuff you’re interested in. ie. Averages, Population Size, Relevance

BY DIVISION HEIGHT Southeast 6' 7.25" Pacific 6' 7.00" Southwest 6' 6.95" Atlantic 6' 6.88" Central 6' 6.78" Northwest 6' 6.75” NBA AVERAGE HEIGHT 6' 6.93" Using the data on the left, we can calculate the average ourselves. The trend is obvious: NBA basketball players are almost always taller than 6’5”. http://www.nba.com/news/survey_height_2006.html

Making a conclusion isn’t always easy Helpful Tips: –Look at the big picture (Try to answer your brainstorming question with one sentence) –See if you can generalize the data

Predicting future outcomes is the most fun part of the process! I predict that the average height of NBA basketball players will rise/fall according to the average height of humans. –Here I am making an inference and a prediction based on the correlation between basketball players’ heights and human height.
