The Media

“The Press” It actually was from A PRESS! Important dynamic: press shop visible and vulnerable—very personal and direct effect ▫ What was printed and how it was worded

Money, money, MONEY! 20 th century economic interests created the impression that media tricked people and didn’t inform them (think exposes on practices in factories—that could DESTROY businesses (even though it was going on)) so it was put out there for people to not believe what they read— tabloid trash

Internet effect: the press can filter what the public saw whereas the internet has no such filters (ex. Beheadings being shown; no check on facts, THIS IS WHY I STRESS ANALYZING YOUR SOURCES SO MIUCH!!!!)

Dispersal Dominant media of the period determined the form of what is delivered Focus of the media was on Congress until 1932 when FDR came to the White House ▫ He LOVED media and used if effectively (Fireside chats, 2 press conferences a week—totally unheard of for the time!) During the newspaper era, the focus was on CONTENT AND INFORMATION NOT ENTERTAINMENT!! Eisenhower was the last president to have newspapers as a major media—since the 1960’s, major breaking news is on TV

Scandals & Debates The 1950’s scandals focused on $, today we focus on sex scandals (Kennedy’s goings on...no news; today it would be LEGENDARY!) Role of TV in political functions (whether decisions to debates ) is ENORMOUS (classic example of the Nixon/Kennedy debate) 1987 Cable TV again changed how news is presented—24 hours a day and yet we have more magazine style shows (BE CAREFUL OF THESE—NOT ALL ARE NEWS!!)

Change All three major networks became part of large conglomerates where the bottom line became more important and news is not a money earner (reference to article) Resources move to a successful news magazine shows like 60 minutes CNN has a major effect on print journalism—it changed the relationship between field reporters and headquarters Today the internet provides a new medium—and blogs, they totally have changed the rules of what is acceptable

Time...is on my side (yes it is ) Newspaper have all day to work on a story TV has ½ day until 6 pm Cable has a few minutes Internet has nanoseconds Lesson to be learned—the more immediate news is not always correct (speed vs. gossip)

Could have, should have, would have The Press SHOULD have OBJECTIVITY—when they begin to ADVOCATE, they lose credibility Cable has changed too-it has become niche broadcasting—it has become very ideological (used to be found more in Europe but is now becoming the way the American press is leaning)—CNN vs. Fox Newspapers aren’t delivering news but becoming more of an analysis—WHICH IS DANGEROUR BECAUSE THERE IS ALWAYS A MOTIVE!!
