3 The Problem Problem: How do we test our user interface designs before we have an expensive hi-fi prototype? Solution: Paper-prototyping allows us to test our sketched user interface with real participants.
4
4 Representative Tasks #1: A person uses our map feature to navigate through safer areas. #2: A person receives a notification informing them of a possibly dangerous incident occurring in her location. #3: A person witnesses a suspicious or unsafe situation, and reports it by entering information into our system and sending the information to a group of his choice.

29
2929 Experimental Results Allen Center Security Guard Completed tasks 1 and 2, could not complete task 3. Invisibility of the 'Next' button caused task 3 to fail. Feedback led to substantial UI change. Odegaard Library Program Assistant Completed tasks 1 and 3, struggled with 2. Could not see where to go from flashing notification screen. University of Washington Student Completed tasks 1, 2, and 3 without trouble once he understood paper prototyping.
30
3030 UI Changes Fairly substantial UI changes occurred after our first usability test. Changed drop-down menus to radio buttons. Added a system status (step 2 out of 5). Notification screen should indicate a clear path forward. Make the “Report a Crime” button harder to get to.
31
3131 Summary Paper prototyping allowed us to do usability testing without developing a hi-fi prototype. Three tasks were set before our participants. We tested our interface on three participants. Changes were made after the first test, and more will come after the last two.
