LIU budget cuts – SPS savings? First brainstorming discussions!!! BG 30/4/14
2
Context CERN trying to save money for ‘diversity’ in physics program – 5% from operation budgets – 10% from project budgets 20 MCHF from LIU – L4 difficult to reduce now (spent) – PSB, needs H- injection, 2 GeV? – PS, difficult to see major spending items – Which leaves the SPS…..
3
no external SPS beam dump – 12'000 kCHF – 2-3x higher activation from LHC beams of internal TIDVG, increased down-time from dump outgassing, kicker vacuum, cable irradiation, limitations on scrubbing beams no aC coating of vacuum system – 4'000 kCHF (maybe more?) – no backup solution for scrubbing, lower 25 ns performance, longer times to prepare SPS for LHC beam no BLM upgrade – 500 kCHF – needs to be done (in CONS) - anyway beyond end of LS2, so not LIU? no HBW damper – 2'000 kCHF (maybe more?) – Cancel LARP collaboration (political issues?), unstable scrubbing beam, longer scrubbing times, lower peak performance with 25 ns beam, no test bed for LHC no MOPOS upgrade – 1'000 kCHF – needs to be done (in CONS)

General comments Any cuts should be done as soon as possible - because a)we stop the spending now (saving more) and b)we also stop as soon as possible people carrying on working on topics which will be cancelled, which is really not a good situation.
