Thriller Genre defines films by their characteristics and by what the audience have come to expect from them. The audience have come to expect suspense and tension from the thriller genre as it usually uses psychological effects on the audience and so the audience have come to expect a tense atmosphere. 1926-the lodger, 1931-M, 1944-Gaslight, 1946-The spiral staircase, 1951-Strangers on a train, 1958-Touch of evil, 1960-Phsyco, 1972- Frenzy and 1989-Dead calm

Timeline of thriller Sub-genres/hybrids are combinations of genres like: Crime-thriller – where there is a crime committed usually a murder and the officers of the law have to figure out a way to defeat the criminal using clues that they gather through out the film. Disaster thriller is where the is a catastrophic natural disaster that puts humanity at risk and the scientists in the film have to figure out a way for humanity to survive. Action thriller is usual of films as the focus is more on explosions and violence. Medical thriller is a weaponised virus or bacteria usually and the protagonist has to come up with a cure, usually both the antagonist and protagonist are doctors.

Narrative, Character and Mise-en- scene The hero is often a detective, normal person or doctor. The anti-hero is often a criminal or illegal doctor. The mise en scene is mostly dim/dark lighting the colour is often dull and ordinary the setting is usually in a big city or a secluded house and the costumes normally consist of trench coats and suits, the figure expression is normally quite awkward.

Mise-on-scene Mise-on-scene is everything on scene at any time in a shot for example; props, actors, lighting all of these contribute to mise-on-scene. In thriller films the mise-on-scene will usually consist of dim lighting, actors that play regular people and this all adds to the typical mood of a thriller film which is tense and suspenseful.

Sound Sound commonly used in the Thriller genre is ambience and fast paced, sharp music which adds to the overall atmosphere of the thriller genre as it adds suspense and tension.
