Introduction  Welcome to the first ALICE T1/T2 tutorial  Delivered for site admins and regional experts responsible of the ALICE services at each site  This will be the UNIQUE tutorial of these characteristics before the real data taking  After several years of production we have collected enough experience to share common problems from both the ALICE and the WLCG perpectives  Let’s put it in common!!  REMEMBER: YOU MAKE THE TUTORIAL, NOT US  ASK, COMMENT, SUGGEST AS MUCH AS YOU NEED

Our motivation  After several years working with VOBOXES, AliEn services,gLite3.1 WMS (LCG-RB before), CREAM-CE (LCG-CE still), xrootd…  Still we are facing questions through the ALICE TF list which should be overcome since a long time  This is worrying for a very important reason  The central team at T0 will not be able to maintain the current level of support while taking real data  Site admins and regional experts will have to take the corresponding responsibility to ensure a 1st level of support  This procedure will ensure a more stable production of ALICE through your sites

Goal of the tutorial  In many cases the reported issues are WLCG questions which must be covered by the site admins  For example: Why the proxy renewal on my vobox does not work?  In addition there are basic ALICE operations that you can perfectly cover  In this tutorial we want to provide you with a very practical guide to face the problems and find the solutions  It is fundamental to understand and separate the WLCG and the ALICE areas

What can you (and can you not)expect of this tutorial?  You will not see a deep description of any service, nor from ALICE neither from WLCG  We have collected the most common issues, questions and procedures you will need and put them all together in a practical guide:  « If A happens then do this »  « If B is stopping the production check that »  Use the slides when you come back to your site in case of problems  And tell us if any new issue appears  We want to have an updated guide

We are doing it already at the T0  New Task Force at CERN to ensure a smooth behavior of all LHC experiment services  We are collecting all experiment services running at all CERN VOBOXES  We are planning to update the criticality of the services together with the experiments and FIO  We will formalized a set of procedures which will be followed by the operators at CERN in case of any problem  Via SLS and Lemon  We are therefore creating a 1st level support for all experiments  The experience at the T0 will be exported with all T1 sites  From the ALICE perspective we want to make something similar with the T2 sites  Assuming of course the QoS associated to T2 sites
