2  The New York Times expresses how so many of India’s citizens are discontented by the release of the film Slumdog Millionaire.  Why is it that so many of the people were left dissatisfied by the film?  Many Indians think that the film has casted a false light on the slums in India and is an attempt to promote slum tourism in an extremely poor section of Mumbai society, which will give tourists a false impression of India’s society in its entirety.  Modern India has recently been working on its credentials as a superpower and portraying kids who live in slums didn’t sit well with at least some of India’s one billion citizens.  Authors Sadia Shepard and Chitra Divakaruni note that screenwriter Simon Beaufoy did not accurately research into the meaning behind the word “dog” in Hindi culture. This resulted in the creation of the offensive title “Slumdog”.
