2
Objective To write a ratio to represent the probability that an event will or will not happen Why? To become more familiar with a variety of situations where probability concepts arise naturally, e.g., where or not a game is fair, the likelihood of rain as part of a weather forecast, the probability that a particular ticket will win the state lottery.

California State Standards SDP 3.3 : Represent probabilities as ratios, …; know that if P is the probability of an event, 1 – P is the probability of an event not occurring. MR 3.1: Evaluate the reasonableness of the solution in the context of the original situation.
4
Vocabulary Probability – The ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to all possible outcomes. Impossible event – An event that cannot happen. An impossible event has a probability of 0 (zero). Certain event – An event that is sure to happen. A certain event has a probability of 1 (one). P – Probability of an event

How to Solve Probability Problems 1)Read the problem. 2)Write a ratio. The numerator is the ‘asking’ or the favorable outcome. The denominator is the total, or all possible outcomes. 3) Either leave as a fraction or simplify as a decimal. And check your work. The probability of getting a green. 4 = 1 8 2
6
How to Solve Probability Problems Probability of NOT landing on yellow P(yellow) = 2 = 1 8 4 P(not yellow) = 1 – ¼ = ¾ Or P(not yellow) = all but yellow = 6 = 3 8 4
7
How to Solve Probability Problems P(green or red) = probability of green AND red. Add them. Green = 4 Red = 1 4 + 1 = 5 = 5 8
8
Try It! Find probability 1)P(B) 2)P(B or C) 3)P(not C) 4)Probability of losing a game = 3 8 What is P(win)? 1) 2 = 1 6 3 2) (B = 2) + (C = 3) 2 + 3 = 5 5 6 3) Not C = 3 3 = 1 6262 4) 1 – 3 8 = 8-3 8 = 5 8

Objective Review To write a ratio to represent the probability that an event will or will not happen Why? To become more familiar with a variety of situations where probability concepts arise naturally, e.g., where or not a game is fair, the likelihood of rain as part of a weather forecast, the probability that a particular ticket will win the state lottery. Write a ratio (fraction) to represent the probability that an event will or will not happen.

Independent Practice Complete problems 5- 12 Copy original problem first. Show all work! If time, complete Mixed Review: 14-17 If still more time, work on Accelerated Math.
