Definitions Probability, P, is a comparison of the number of favorable outcomes to the number of possible outcomes. The mathematical probability of an event can be written as a fraction. P = number of favorable outcomes/number of possible outcomes
3
Example 1 Math is written on a card and placed in a bag. MATH 1 favorable outcome: letter A 4 possible outcomes: MATH
4
Example 2 A number cube numbered 1 to 6 P(1) = 1/6 P(even number) = 3/6 = ½ P(0) = 0 P(1 or 3) = 2/6
5
Example 3 P(black pentagon) = 6/16 = 3/8 P(white pentagon) = 10/16 = 5/8 P(red pentagon) = 0 How many possible outcomes are there? 16 How many favorable outcomes are there for the black pentagons? 6
