3 Today we will explore probabilities. We will learn what a probability is, how to calculate one, and what they are used for. Also in this lesson are some new vocabulary words that are seen in probability problems. And finally, we will try a few problems for practice. Use the buttons on the bottom of your screen to navigate through the lesson. Read carefully, and if you get lost, just click the home button. It’s the little house located on the bottom right of your screen. This button is one every page, and will take you back to the home page. Vocabulary Terms Calculating Probabilities Why? 4 Probability- How likely something is to happen. Trial- A formal examination of evidence; also called a test. Outcome- All possible results for a given test. Event- A single result of an experiment.

5 To calculate the probability of an outcome, you must divide the number of successful outcomes by the total number of outcomes possible.

6 Probabilities help us make predictions on the likelihood of certain events. Such events include odds of getting a head or tail when flipping a coin, or even the odds of you going on vacation this summer.

18 That’s Right! Gerolamo Cardano, born in 1501, was the first to explore the realm of probability. Gerolamo wanted to see if their was a way for him to predict his chances of winning when he gambled. He created many other mathematical concepts that we still use today, like the cubic equation. And while he also made significant progress in what we now consider the study of probability, he was generally in debt for most of his life due to his gambling habits.
