1 Active and Passive Voice Give that writing some action!!

2 Passive Voice It’s easy to avoid if you know the signals and how to recognize it.

3 What is passive voice, and how can you tell if you are using it? Will always include a verb in the form of “be” or linking verbs. Also recognized when a verb phrase includes “by…”

4 Active and Passive Voice Active voice – subject performs the action. Passive voice – subject receives the action.

5 Examples of active and passive voice. The tornado left a path of destruction. A path of destruction was left by the tornado.

6 The article was written by Jessica. Jessica wrote the article. Many inventions were created by Edison. Edison created many inventions. Everyone in need is helped by Sarah. Sarah helped everyone in need. The ball was caught by Mrs. Miller. Mrs. Miller caught the ball. ~The active voice is always stronger.

7 Steps to finding passive verbs. 1. Locate subject of the sentence. 2. Is the subject performing the action or receiving the action? 3. Is there a “be” verb and ”by” in the sentence? 4. To determine the receiver of the action, ask yourself, “What (or who) was ______?” Complete all Odd problems on pgs. 97-98
