5 “The self, the I, and the me” “Mead wants to point out that the characteristic of self is an object of itself. "Self" is reflexive, and indicates both subject and object. This object is different from other objects, it distinguished as conscious, a term that indicates an experience with, an experience of, one's self. The example given in the book, is that of a man running to get away from something” “I" and the "Me." The "Me" is the social self and the "I" is the response to the "Me." 9 Francesca's Interaction  “Interaction is viewed as a "performance," shaped by environment and audience, constructed to provide others with "impressions" that are consonant with the desired goals of the actor.”  Performance- Francesca’s interaction with her mother  Environment- Home  Audience- Francesca’s family, specifically her mother  Goal impression- To appear confident and with a high level of self-esteem since her mother did not approve of her choice to have weight loss surgery

10 The Mask  To avoid giving her mother more reason to doubt her decision to have surgery, she hides her deep feelings of low self-esteem and depression  Her mask to her family is one of confidence.  She walks with her head held high, speaks clearly, smiles often, attempts to exude confidence.
