CHAPTER 5: ENERGY RESOURCES SECTION 4: ENERGY CONSERVATION

What are we learning about today? 1. What are two ways to preserve our current energy source? Key Terms: EfficiencyInsulation Energy conservation

Fossil Fuel Shortage = - Heating and cooling systems would cease to function - forests would disappear for wood usage - vehicles would be stranded = no fuel - 70% of world’s electric power would disappear - technology use would be greatly reduced -usage of T.V.’s, computers, microwave ovens, and other home appliances appliances One way to preserve our current energy resources is to increase the efficiency of our energy use. Another way is to conserve energy whenever possible One way to preserve our current energy resources is to increase the efficiency of our energy use. Another way is to conserve energy whenever possible

I. Energy Efficiency- A. Efficiency- the percentage of energy that is actually used to perform A. Efficiency- the percentage of energy that is actually used to perform work. work. 1. save energy resources by using energy efficiently 1. save energy resources by using energy efficiently B. Heating and Cooling- B. Heating and Cooling- 1. insulation- a layer of material that traps air to help block the transfer of heat between the air inside and outside a building. transfer of heat between the air inside and outside a building. a. Increase efficiency of heat loss b. Looks like pink cotton candy, made of fiberglass c. Air bn window panes also acts as insulation (windows are double paned) double paned)

C. Lighting- C. Lighting- 1. incandescent light bulb = less than 10% of electricity that the bulb uses is converted into light uses is converted into light 2. Fluorescent bulbs use about a ¼ of the energy and provide the same amount of light same amount of light

D. Transportation- D. Transportation- 1. better engines and tires have been created 2. reduce amount of cars on the road -use public transit system or carpooling - carpooling lanes are now set aside to encourage

II. Energy Conservation- A. Energy conservation- reducing energy use. A. Energy conservation- reducing energy use. 1. change your behavior to help the environment a. walk to the store b. Ride a bike
