1 Focused Learning Target: I will be able to write an I AM POEM from the perspective of a child laborer in England w/ 7 supporting historical details from the notes we learned today.

3  Shift from rural to cities  New job opportunities drove ppl to move to the cities  Most of Europe’s urban areas at least doubled in population  Factories developed in clusters…to stay near an energy source  London-Europe’s largest city w/ a population of over 1 million by 1800

4  Cities unprepared for the large influx of ppl  Lacked adequate housing, education and police protection  Unpaved streets had no drains  Lots of garbage  Lived in dirty shelters  Sickness was widespread

5  Wanted to keep the machines running as much as possible  Worked 14 hour shifts, 6 days a week  Same job everyday!!! Doesn’t change  Factories not well-lit or clean  Many industrial accidents occurred (esp. in the coal minees)

6  Poverty for the working class  Saw little improvement in their lives  Some frustrated as they were being replaced by machines  But a wealthier, middle class emerges  Made up of skilled workers, professionals, businesspeople, and wealthy farmers  Later, made up of gov’t employees, doctors, lawyers and mangers of factories

7  Created jobs  Contributed to the wealth of the nation  Fostered technological innovations and inventions  Increased production of goods=cheaper to buy  Provided hope for improvement for better life

8  Children as young as 6 worked in factories  Worked 14 hours a day  Short break for lunch and dinner  To keep children awake, they would get beaten  Many children injured on the job  Work=no school  Factory Act of 1819: restricted working age and hours

9 A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words... I AM POEM!!!

10 Guidelines  Choose 1 picture and 1 person in that picture and write an ‘I AM POEM’ from his/her point of view  DON’T LOSE THE PICTURE!!! You only get 1 and it will be glued or taped to your final draft!!!  FINAL DRAFT Must be TYPED  Need a minimum of 7 supporting details from your notes or textbook!!!  You must include a supporting detail from each of the 6 categories from the “Effects of Industrialization” notes that you took!!!  BE DESCRIPTIVE!!!Each line of your poem has to be a minimum of 10 words!!!
