The Resolution Whereas journals, serials, books, and media (hereafter referred to as "library materials") acquired by the UTC Library are subject to automatic yearly price increases due to inflation costs imposed by publishers; Whereas past funding for library materials has been inconsistent and led to a pattern of unsustainable cuts to the library materials budget; Whereas this inconsistency in past funding for library materials has led to confusion and inadequate funding of library materials for new academic programs and degrees; Whereas robust library resources are essential to UTC achieving its aspiration to become a Top 5 Public Master’s University in the South; Whereas the Faculty Senate has passed all four resolutions that have been presented in the past eight years requesting ongoing, consistent support for the library materials budget; Be it resolved that the Faculty Senate calls for the campus administration to fund inflation on library materials as a “cost going forward” each year (similar to campus utilities) by allocating a funding increase at the beginning of the campus budgetary process to ensure a sustainable collection of quality library materials for student and faculty curricular and research use. The amount of yearly inflation funding should be derived from the Library and Book Trade Almanac, which indexes yearly changes to library material costs. Further, the Faculty Senate calls for campus administration to provide funds for new library materials and services as funds are available. April 3, 2012
