Pronouns and the verb “ser”

›The subject is the person or thing that is being described or is doing something. The verb is an action word or a word like am, is or are. ›Ejemplo: Señorita Eggleston es mi profesora. › Miss Eggleston is my teacher. › Subject verb predicate/description ›Ella es de Los Estados. ›She is from the U.S.

›Nouns can be replaced with pronouns when the subject is known. In the sentences below, Ramona and ella refer to the same person. “Ella” is a pronoun meaning “she”. ›Ej: Ramona es mi amiga. Ella es mi compañera de clase. ›Ramona is my friend. She is my classmate.

›Ej: Alejandro es mi mejor amigo. › Es de Perú. › Alex is my best friend. › (He) is from Peru.

›Ser (pronounced “sayer”) means “to be”. Use this verb to say am, is or are. Anytime you use a noun or subject pronoun with a verb you must conjugate or change it to match the subject. Memorize these Spanish conjugations and pronouns.

›Ej: El sr. Warren es sociable. › ______________________ ›Ej: Él es sociable. › ______________________ ›Ej: La srta. Eggleston y El sr. Warren son inteligentes. ›______________________ ›Ej: Ellos son inteligentes. ›______________________

›To make a sentence negative, add the word “no” before the verb. ›Ej: Nosotros no somos antipáticos (mean). ›________________________ ›Ej: Ellos no son ignorantes. ›________________________
