Magnet Test Facilities at Fermilab Peter Limon April 12, 2006

P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 2 Outline The Tevatron MTF facilities & tooling Examples of recent tests Experts to consult Conclusions

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 3 The Tevatron About 1300 cryogenic devices including –774 (6.6m) dipoles of two types (9 tons) –180 standard (1.8m) quads of two types (F & D) –About 50 other quads (matching and IR) –About 220 “spool pieces” with correctors in 9 types –About 30 -40 special cryo devices (bypasses, end boxes, etc.) –About 30 (?) conventional magnets (septa, kickers, etc.) Operating since 1984 as fixed target and pbar-p collider

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 4 Magnet Testing Testing and retesting of spares and standard magnets Qualification of new magnets. –Occasional changes in the Tevatron configuration Studies performed at the request of the Accelerator Division –This is a major activity of MTF, in addition to magnet R&D and LHC magnet tests The tests include both superconducting and conventional magnets

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 5 Facilities & Tooling Fermilab MTF has two stands available to test & measure Tevatron magnets –Not including warm stand –Maximum during production was six cold stands –Requires a refrigerator. We have a 1.5 kW job capable of 1.8 K operation Fermilab MTF also has one LHC stand, a place for lead tests, a 4.5m vertical dewar (with 30 kA supply), three stands for conventional magnets, a probe shop and software & instrument development. All this requires a skilled worker set!

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 6 MTF with LHC magnet

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 7 Vertical Magnet Test Facility

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 8 Recent Magnet Tests (1) Summary of Tevatron Tests in the Fermilab Magnet Test Facility from ~ Sep. 1996 to Mar. 2006 3/19/06 M.Tartaglia (Draft) Classification of Tevatron-related test activities Cryo-Mechanical Studies R&D Thermal Tests Dipole (Single Phase temperature profiles, vs {Y,Z}) Low Beta and Arc Quads (device heat loads) Spool Pieces (Heat Loads; Static, vs Lead Flow) Recooler Spool efficiency Spool Thermometry (Carbon Resistors) R&D Mechanical Studies Dipole,Quad Roll – warm and cold magnet roll to assess mechanical and vacuum limitations

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 9 Recent Magnet Tests (2) Device Certification for cryogenic tunnel use {New, Repaired, Spare} Standard Spools (N,R,S) Corrector alignment; Corrector quench performance Recooler Spools (N) HTS Spools (N) Dipoles (S) Quench performance grade Review performance if questionable historic MTF (and/or tunnel) data Re-certify magnets w/helium spaces flooded with water in the tunnel Resolve (warm) hi-pot performance questions (pure helium source) Arc Quads (S) Low Beta Quads (R,S) Quench Heaters Repaired Strength

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 10 Recent Magnet Tests (3) Magnetic Performance Low Beta Quad Warm, Cold Alignment Gradient Transfer Function precision measurements Device Alignment Spool Correctors Dipole skew quad arising from shrinkage of supports Warm and cold lift on “smart bolts” Stability of Harmonics in “normal” and “broken” anchor candidates Dipole field angle stability and mechanical roll limits Potentially broken anchors (In MTF and Tevatron Tunnel) R&D on Dynamic Effects in Run II Both Dipole and Quad Resource for System and Device Development R&D Testing Uniform 4.5 to 5 Tesla Magnetic Dipole Field Study of correlated noise levels for accelerator physics (Shiltsev) Photo-detector electronics for LHC experiments (NICADD) Fiber Polarimeter magnetic measurement technique (Tai-Yang SBIR)

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 11 Experts to Consult Accelerator-related issues –Elvin Harms –Bob Mau Magnet tests (Tevatron) –Historical -- Ray Hanft –Now -- Mike Tartaglia, Mike Lamm

April 12, 2006 P. Limon --- Magnet Test Facilities - CERN 12 Conclusions Have a small (few stand) cold-test operation always available. Have the support facilities and staff for operation and improvement of the facility. Keep, and renew the skilled labor (scientists, engineers, technicians) required to do all this work. They will keep busy doing the R&D work needed for the future of CERN.
