2 Discussion –What is the role of government in our nation? –What powers does the government have over the people? –Is the government restricted in what it can do in regards to power? –How does the government maintain this power?

3 You do What… Modern governments are expected to assume responsibility for protecting the political and social rights of their citizens.

4 You do What… Cont. Governments are to: –supervise and resolve conflicts –preserve a unified state –are responsible for regulating the economy.

5 Functions The following functions have been generally recognized as belonging to the government: national defence, maintaining domestic peace, public education, fire protection, traffic control, aid to the poor, and postal services.

6 The Federal government is responsible for:  National Defence  Foreign Affairs  Postal Services  Currency Provincial Government is responsible for:  Education  Roads  Hospitals Supreme Court: Arbitrates disputes between the two governments and interprets the Canadian Constitution (Social Contract).

9 Activity With the person beside you discuss this phrase "the greatest good for the greatest number" What does this mean? How does it apply to governments? Give an example of this happening in Canada.
