Charles Lindbergh ✣ Charles Lindbergh was born February 4th, 1902. ✣ Had exceptional mechanical skills. ✣ Became a “Barnstormer” at the Nebraska Aircraft Corporation. ✣ Worked as US Army test pilot/ airmail man. ✣ Married Anne Spencer Morrow, had son Charles Augustus Jr. and Jon. ✣ First Transatlantic flight between two major international cities. ✣ Went on to help develop moon travel, artificial hearts, and work as conservationist. ✣ Died of cancer August 26th, 1974, buried in Hawaii.

The Orteig Prize ✣ Offered by Raymond Orteig to first nonstop flight from New York to Paris. ✣ $25,000 dollar prize. ✣ Offered May 19th, 1919. ✣ Not achieved until May 20th, 1927. ✣ Many famous aviators participated. ✣ Resulted in 6 deaths. ✣ Lindbergh the poorest and the youngest. ✣ Lindbergh flew the Spirit of St. Louis. ✣ Went for a lightweight, simple design.

4. To Paris! ✣ 7:52 A.M., May 20, 1927: Lindbergh took off for Paris. ✣ 11:52 A.M.: Lindbergh had visual of Nova Scotia and was 6 miles, or 2 degrees off course. ✣ 5:22pm: The Spirit of St. Louis touches down at the Le Bourget Aerodrome, Paris, France. ✣ Total flight time: 33 hours, 30 minutes, 29.8 seconds. ✣ Charles Lindbergh had not slept in 55 hours.

5. Return to U.S. ✣ Lindbergh came back aboard the USS Memphis. ✣ More than 4 million people lined up along the parade route. ✣ Mayor Jimmy Walker gave Lindbergh the Medal of Valor. ✣ The “Spirit of St. Louis” flew on a sponsored trip to 49 states, visited 92 cities, gave 147 speeches, and rode in 1,290 miles worth of parades. ✣ On March 21,1929, President Coolidge presented him with the nation's highest honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor.
