2 Institute Mission … foster the adoption of new & evolving tools, methods, and technologies by those in library service through exploration and sharing of experience in an annual, residential, summer symposium for library leaders and technologists … support community of library leaders in an era of rapid change … enhance their capacities

3 Institute Goals An exciting, intense, interactive annual symposium on the Stanford campus Deep inquiry into impact of technology on library services Coordinate with other Library initiatives in California World-wide attendance, but weighted for California librarians

4 Why the Institute? Stanford –Appropriate contributions of a private university to library service in California & to the profession at large: exemplars, models, experiments –Commitment to affecting the direction and fairness of information technology California State Library –Need for in-service, mid career continuing education and development focused on technology and leadership

5 Why Stanford? Commitment to practical results - A 100-year legacy Commitment to exploration and application of information technology - A 50-year history Active engagement in solving issues affecting libraries - HighWire Press Breadth of resources within SUL/AIR Experience with disaster management

6 Summer Symposium Five days, including meals and evenings Plenary morning sessions In-depth afternoon tracks Structured interactive times Hands-on experience Taught by leading practitioners

7 Summer Symposium Attendance Current and future leaders –Including technical and upper administration Multi-type libraries Limited to 150 individuals 2/3 from California - 1/3 from elsewhere Fees waived for qualified staff of California libraries

8 Summer Symposium Tracks Strategic planning -- results oriented tactics Digitization standards, policies, procedures, technologies Emergency preparedness / Disaster response Government & community relations; funding strategies Preservation & conservation

9 Outputs and future developments Web site Video recording Broadcast –webcasting and/or narrow casting Development of distance learning program –Managerial / Technical Goal: Credit toward certification / degrees

13 Commitment Not “just another library conference” Practical orientation Relevant content Rigorous attention to implications of information technology Like the Stanford Publishing Course, a community building program

14 Interim Steps Identify specific needs and interests of California libraries through –Advisory Group –Survey / Focus Groups –Feedback from participants and their colleagues Conduct “mini-institutes” Develop curriculum / faculty / arrangements for Summer 2000 residential symposium
