THE FESTIVALS IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY Udane Cabanillas

Hi I am Udane and I am going to talk about some of the festivals, of the Basque country. These festivals means in meet up with friends and also spend a good time. The most of the festivals are in the summer like: Amabirjiñak, Saninaziyuak, Andramaxak, San pedruak…

AMABIRJIÑAK

This festival is celebrated in Zestoa. The festival is for four days.

In this festival there are bulls. There isn’t bullring in Zestoa, so they built one for this festival, but the bullring is different from the others, because this is rectangular.

At night, there are groups playing music, and people dance.

SANINAZIYUAK

The other festival, is Saninaziyuak. This festival is very important for Azpeitia’s people, because it is dedicated to San Ingnazio of Loiola.

In Azpeitia,there is one bullring, and during this festival, the bulls in Azpeitia are very important, because come important bullfighters.

At night there also are groups of music, and fireworks.

ANDRAMAXAK

This festival is for Azkoitia’s people.

When the mayor throws light the roman candel, people dress up as giants with long heads and they go around the streets, hitting people.

At night there are fireworks and fire bull. The fire bull is a man, wearing a bull head throwing fireworks. He runs, around the square between people.

SANPEDRUAK

Sanpedruak festival, celebrated in Zumaia.

In this festival put young bulls on the beach, because in Zumaia there isn’t any bulllring.

During the mornig there are giants and long heads. During the day there are groups called “txaranga”, who play music to animated the festival. Town people, dance tradisional songs in the square.

The winter festivals are also good. But are more tradisionals,as Santomasak, Soroperi, Santelmo…

SOROPERI AND SANTO TOMASAK

Soroperi and Santotomase’s are more or less the same. Soroperi celebrated in Zestoa, and Santotomases in Azpeitia.

In these festivals in the morning there are, little stands with tradicional food, and people dress up, with traditional Basque clothes.

SANTELMO

Santelmo’s festival celebrated in Zumaia.

Zumaia, is near the sea. This festival is dedicated to Zumaia’s old fishers, so they celebrated it eating tradisional fish and people dress up as old fishers.
