Overview of Electrical Engineering Madeleine Andrawis, Ph.D., Professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department South Dakota State University Engineering the Future

What do Electrical Engineers do? 4 Electrical Engineers have exciting careers designing anything and everything that uses electricity. 4 Areas of emphasis at SDSU: Power Systems and Controls, Electronic Materials and Sensor Devices, Communications, Image and Signal Processing, Biomedical Engineering.

Power Systems and Controls 4 Design and analysis of power generation, renewable energy systems, distribution, load management, and control systems. 4 Large equipment, such as generators, transformers, and transmission lines. 4 High voltages and high currents.

Energy Sources Oil is the largest supplier of energy –security risk since majority of current sources are in politically unstable regions (mid-east) Renewable Energy Systems include: Solar, Wind, and Solar Photovoltaic. Energy sources in 2005

Solar Energy 4 The sun delivers 122,000 TW/yr of energy to the earth 4 This is 70,000 TIMES more than current energy uses in a year. 4 Sun is an enormous resource to be harnessed

Photovoltaics 4 Photovoltaic devices convert light (photon) to electricity (voltage)

Wind Power 7 The shaft of a wind turbine is connected to an electrical generator at the top of the turbine’s pole or tower. The generator converts the mechanical energy of the spinning turbine shaft to electricity and sends that energy down the tower along wires to a power grid or energy storage area.

Energy Storage 4 An example of a new energy storage project in Canada 4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYxSi0C hzsk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYxSi0C hzsk 8

Electronic Materials/Sensor Devices 4 Design and fabrication of microelectronic integrated circuits, sensors, and transducers.

Communications 4 Digital, and fiber optics systems design, modeling, and computer simulation. 4 HDTV, Satellite Communications, GPS.

Image and Signal Processing 4 Computer-based analysis and conditioning of signals and images for numerous applications in communications, computers, space, and medicine.

Biomedical Engineering 4 Design, research and development of products for the medical profession. 4 Research to develop new technologies for the detection and treatment of illnesses. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/mri/SM00035

Electrical Engineering Engineering the Future Digital Circuits Fundamentals Hands-on Full-Adder Simulation (afternoon) Analog Circuits Fundamentals Hands-on Flashlight Project (morning)
