This political cartoon is saying that the republic party is being pushed over the edge by the democrat party during reconstruction. Since Abraham Lincoln was spearheading the reconstruction process, when he was assassinated the democratic party took over reconstruction. Then the democrats changed everything that Lincoln had in place for reconstruction. And the democrats took control of everything during reconstruction.

In this political cartoon the republicans (the lamb) were eaten by the democrats (the tiger). The southern democrats were taking power over the north, and “devouring” them. The south was beginning to take control.
3
In this political cartoon the democrats (the tiger) is attacking itself. This means that the actions that the southern democrats took were actually hurting themselves rather than aiding in the long run. The democrats turned on each other just like the democratic tiger attacking itself.

This is a cartoon of Andrew Johnson “Kicking out the freedmen’s bureau with his veto.” This Freedmen’s bureau was to help former enslaved African Americans. With the veto he overturned the Freedmen’s bureau, since he did not like African Americans. The point of view of the author is probably sympathizing for the African Americans, since he made it seem like Johnson was literally crushing the Bureau.

This is a depiction of the Election of 1876, where Samuel Tilden actually beat Rutherford B. Hayes by 250,000 more votes. Tilden is in the middle, Hayes is on the right, and a soldier on the left. But Tilden only had one short of electoral votes to win, so it was in doubt. So the soldier, and Hayes are staring down Hayes, since there in big doubt. The point of view of the author seems to be against Tilden, since it shows two people questioning him.

This cartoon shows the Democratic tiger, representing the Democrats, finally becoming violent. Democrats were against the south, and after the Amnesty Act, they got really mad. The Amnesty Act basically pardoned former Confederates. All white southerners could then vote and be involved in politics. In return, the Democrats, (tiger) got mad and regained power by terrorizing republican voters. The Ku Klux Klan also helped them. They did win an election in Mississippi because of it, and prevented African Americans from voting. The Tiger was violent and wild now.

Role of Political Cartoons
The role political cartoons play in society may not be huge, but it is somewhat important. In my opinion, it can be a funny and interesting way to stay informed with politics and the world and at the same time learning.
