4 WHY? & HOW? 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW…. ….ABOUT THE DRAFT NYSSLS HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=BRMNCBJXKFQ&FEATURE=YOUTU.BE #1. The current NYS MST learning standards are out-of-date. #2. The draft NYSSLS were developed from the NGSS. #3. Our draft NYSSLS were strongly influenced by the NGSS, although they are not exactly the same. #4. The Statewide Strategic Plan for Science will guide the implementation of the NYSSLS. #5. A timetable for NYSSLS implementation has not been fully developed. #6. Resources for classroom implementation are already available for view. #7. The draft NYSSLS represent the level of preparation that all HS graduates need for post- secondary education in the 21 st century. #8. The standards will be used to guide the creation of formative and summative assessments. #9. The Regents have asked for feedback from the field about the draft NYSSLS. #10. Your input is vital.

5 ADDRESSING THREE COMMON MYTHS ABOUT THE NGSS ARTICLE BY KENNETH HUFF, NGSS WRITER, NSTA MIDDLE LEVEL SCIENCE TEACHING DIRECTOR, SIXTH GRADE TEACHER WILLIAMSVILLE, NY MYTH1 – SCIENCE IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS ALREADY CONTAINED IN THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS, ELA MYTH 2 – WE ARE ALREADY DOING THIS MYTH 3 – NGSS LIMITS WHAT SCIENCE CAN BE TAUGHT IN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL

6 HOW CAN YOU HELP TO GET THE BOARD OF REGENTS TO APPROVE THE NYSSLS CONTACT OUR LOCAL REGENT AND POLITICIANS SPEAK TO YOUR PTA AND LOCAL COMMUNITY TO MAKE THEM AWARE OF THE NYSSLS THESE STAKEHOLDERS NEED TO KNOW THAT SCIENCE EDUCATORS SUPPORT THESE NEW STANDARDS. MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS THAT NYSSLS IS NOT COMMON CORE.

13 BREAKOUT LET’S PRACTICE HOW WE CAN SHOW OUR TEACHERS WHAT 3-DIMENSIONAL LEARNING IS WE WILL SEPARATE INTO SIX GROUPS ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOL, EARTH SCIENCE, BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, CHOOSE A PERFORMANCE EXPECTATION AND DETERMINE WHAT SPECIFIC CROSSCUTTING CONCEPTS AND SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING PRACTICES COULD BE USED TO TEACH THIS TOPIC 3- DIMENSIONALLY. SELECT ONE PERSON TO SHARE YOUR GROUP’S WORK.

14 GRADUATION PATHWAYS STEM MATHEMATICS PATHWAY ELA, 1 SOCIAL STUDIES, 4 MATHEMATICS, 2 SCIENCE STEM SCIENCE PATHWAY ELA, 1 SOCIAL STUDIES, 3 SCIENCE, 3 MATHEMATICS IN ADDITION, STUDENTS MUST CHOOSE EITHER 2 ADDITIONAL CREDITS IN LOTE AND THE FLACS CHECKPOINT B EXAM OR A 5 UNIT SEQUENCE IN THE ARTS OR CTE MASTERY IN MATH AND/OR SCIENCE STUDENTS WHO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE REGENTS DIPLOMA WITH ADVANCED DESIGNATION AND EARN A SCORE OF 85 OR BETTER ON 3 MATHEMATICS AND/OR 3 SCIENCE REGENTS EXAMINATIONS ARE ENTITLED TO A MASTERY IN MATH OR SCIENCE DESIGNATION ON THEIR DIPLOMA. STUDENTS WHO EARN A 90 OR BETTER ON 3 MATHEMATICS/AND OR SCIENCE REGENTS EXAMINATIONS RECEIVE AN HONORS DESIGNATION ON THEIR DIPLOMA.
