1.4 Exponents Mme DiMarco

 Learning Goal: using exponents to represent repeated multiplication Learning Goal

 When numbers are repeated in multiplication, we can write them in exponent form  We can write 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 as 2 4  2 is the base  4 is the exponent  2 4 is the power We say “2 to the power of 4” Exponents 2424 Base Exponent Power

 Square number: a power with an exponent 2 (ex, 4 2 )  Here are three ways to write 16:  Standard form: 16  Expanded form: 4 x 4  Exponent form: 4 2  Cube number: a power with an exponent 3 (ex, 4 3 )  Here are three ways to write 64:  Standard form: 64  Expanded form: 4 x 4 x 4  Exponent form: 4 3 Square and Cube Numbers

Write in exponent form 1.6 x 6 1.5 x 5 x 5 1.32 Example 1

Write in exponent form 1.6 x 6 = 6 2 1.5 x 5 x 5 = 5 3 1.32 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 2 5 Solutions

Write in expanded form and standard form 1.3 5 1.7 4 Example 2

Write in expanded form and standard form 1.3 5 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 (expanded) = 243 (standard) 2.7 4 = 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 (expanded) = 2401 (standard) Solutions

 Pages 25 and 26  Questions # 1 – 8, 10 Homework
