What is Pullorum Disease? Pullorum disease is an infection in chickens caused by a strain of salmonella called salmonella Pullorum Bacterial Most common in young chicks Older chickens can also get infected

Symptoms WeaknessAnorexia Poor Growth Chalk White Feces Droopy Wings Death

How is Pullorum Disease transmitted? Bacteria in feces Contaminated feed, water, incubators, footwear, clothing, flies and equipment Trans-ovarial transmission (through the hen’s eggs)

Prevention Avoid flocks that are infected Get rid of infectors—even if chickens are recovered they can still carry the disease

Treatments Vaccines –Amoxycillin –Poteniated Sulponamide –Tetracylines Pullorum Bacteria

Post-mortem Findings Enlargement of liver, spleen and kidneys Swollen joints with yellow fluid White/gray lumps on heart, lungs and gizzard
