My Lai Massacre On March 16, 1968, an American platoon under the command of Lt. William Calley. Suspecting that V.C. were in the area, they were instructed to kill all V.C., North Vietnamese combatants, suspects, and burn the village and pollute the wells.

My Lai Massacre When the soldiers reached the village, they found no enemy combatants. Suspecting the enemy was being harbored underground by wives and elderly family members they approached the village firing, though there were no reports of opposing fire.
7
My Lai Massacre The mission quickly turned into the massacre of around 300 unarmed women, children, and elderly. Eyewitness accounts recall numerous elderly men being bayoneted, women and children who were praying being shot and killed. Eyewitness accounts also recall at least one young girl being raped by the U.S. soldiers.
8
My Lai Massacre Eyewitness accounts also recall Lt. William Calley rounding up a group of villagers, ordering them into a ditch, and then mowing them down with a fury of machine gun fire.
9
My Lai Massacre A nearby helicopter pilot, Hugh Thompson Jr. saw the massacre take place. Thompson was able to save 11 civilians and a young boy from the massacre, despite being unable to stop Calley from killing the civilians.

My Lai Massacre Lt. Calley was charged with murder in 1969, and sentenced to life in prison. There was only enough evidence to convict him alone. In 1974, Calley was released after numerous appeals. In 2009, Calley apologized for everything that he did on March 16, 1968.
