GLOBALIZATION Goal: To gain an understanding of the impact this phenomenon has had on our world as well as the historical links to time periods discussed throughout the semester.

GLOBALIZATION Do Now: Using your first assignment prepare to discuss the questions below Discussion questions: –How do you define globalization? –How is globalization affecting you? Can you see it in your everyday life? –Why could or would one say the world is flat? The increasing interconnectedness of different parts of the world through common processes of economic, political, and cultural change. Economic globalization is happening fastest.

Background Nineteenth and twentieth centuries (1800s and 1900s) – Periods of rapidly accelerating interconnections between the world’s peoples. – Imperialism, war, and trade connect people and governments into new economic, political, and social relationships. In the nineteenth century, the development of: – Mass media connects distant lands and peoples to world cultures and social movements In the twentieth century transportation, radio, television, and computer technology enhanced the globalization process Result: popular cultural trends in one region could quickly spread across the world. – Trends can be modified for local traditions and became included in local popular cultures.

CRITICAL THINKING ACTIVITY Due Date TBA: Individually: List at least 6 ways the Olympic games, popular music/culture, and sports reflect the forces of globalization. Next, share your list with the members in your group Next, decide on the best 6 – without being repetitive – by reflecting upon the thoughts and lists from your group’s members. Next, categorize your group’s top 6 ideas into the criteria listed below. Finally, decide on a way to present and communicate your findings to the class (For example: Illustrated chart, YouTube clip, Skit, etc.) Note: you may have to reevaluate your group’s top 6 to complete this task. 1. National identities 2. Cultural adaptations 3. Communication technology 4. Transportation technology 5. Economic process 6. Global identities.
