Shape as a design element The silhouette or the overall form or outline of an outfit or clothing style. Most Silhouettes are formed by: The width and length of the neckline, sleeves, and/or waistline. The width and length of pants and skirts

Using Shape in Clothing Form-fitting clothes reveal any unattractive contours If clothing is too tight, it can make one look overweight Necessary to decide where one’s shape is best and select a silhouette that accentuates that feature

Personal Reflection Decide the best areas of your silhouette –Must have at least 3 Find 3 magazine cutouts that demonstrate proper or improper use of clothing to accent your chosen areas. On white paper mount your cutouts and label each one Make sure you have a heading Write a paragraph summarizing your work on the white paper

Texture: The look and feel of fabric. Can create illusions of size Can disguise figure irregularities Can add interest to a garment Textile & Apparel Production I28

Structural texture: Texture determined by the fibers, yarns, and the method of construction used to produce a garment. Examples: velvet shirt, striped wool pants Added visual texture: The finishes and designs applied to the surface of the fabric. Examples: The print of the fabric can give the illusion of height or width to the wearer. Shiny textures make people look larger because they reflect light. Texture can be provided in two ways…

Smooth, flat textures make people look smaller Shiny textures make the body look larger b/c they reflect light Rough textures have the opposite effect Dull textures make a person look smaller b/c they absorb light

First week of work You have just been hired as a designer and the company you work for is launching a new line of ties. Your task is to design 2 ties and you must be able to discuss about them in terms of the elements of design –Color, line, shape, and texture
