1 Parallel Libraries on BlueGene/L Lorna Smith EPCC l.smith@epcc.ed.ac.uk

2 BlueGene/L  Massively parallel system from IBM –131,072 processors, 367 teraFLOPS/s peak –System-on-chip technology, modest processor clock rate –Excellent price/performance, power consumption/performance ratios –Cost ~ 100 million dollars  Equivalent HPCx class system –Cost ~ 2 billion dollars –Over 2000 cabinets  Cutting edge SuperComputer technology

3 EPCC and HPC  Project builds on considerable HPC experience within EPCC –One of the leading HPC Centres in Europe, since 1990  Proven track record in parallel computing and performance optimisation –MPI, OpenMP, optimised libraries, Java Grande  Supported numerous world class HPC systems –Meiko T800, i860, CS2, Cray T3D, T3E, HPCx, QCDOC..  Current projects –HPCx and QCDOC

4 Collaborative Project  1 year project with IBM –Aim: port and optimise libraries for BlueGene/L –Numerical libraries often key to achieving good scalability in real applications  Collaborative Project with IBM –John Gunnels, TJ Watson Research Centre, Yorktown Heights –Diane Moench, Tom Liebsch, IBM Rochester –Christos Kartsaklis, Stephen Booth, Mark Bull, Lorna Smith, EPCC  Hopefully the first of a longer term collaboration with IBM over BlueGene/L –Funding to buy a small research oriented system in 2004 –Next big UK procurement kicks off in 2005 (HECToR)
