Introduction to the Skeletal System

Just For Fun! Let’s see who knows the most about bones! Everyone put your chromebooks and phones away! Use a partner and estimate the number of bones in the adult human body If you guess within 5 bones (either direction), I will give you a reward!

Introduction to Bones The skeletal system is a complex and intricate series of bones and connective tissues that give the body structure and support Without the skeletal system, our bodies would not be able to support itself, move or have a basis for cells to grow This system is a very personal system because many of us have broken bones before

Video Only the first clip is a broken bone… but it’s a good one https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=VIUhf4tx0RE https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=VIUhf4tx0RE

Introduction to Bones A human baby will be born with around 270 bones These bones will fuse and become a set number as an adult There are 206 bones in the adult human body They take up around 15% of the body mass of a human (based on BMI)

Functions of Bones The human skeletal system has five main functions that define its role in the human body Support – the skeletal system provides framework for the different parts of the body that move and function Storage of Minerals and Lipids – Many different things are stored within our bones that can be released when levels get low

Functions of Bones Blood Cell Production – Red blood cells, white blood cells and other blood elements are produced inside of bone marrow Protection – Many soft tissues are surrounded by bones to help protect them from damage Leverage – Many bones are designed to help apply force and help generate power

Bone Shapes There are six major bone shapes Each type of bone has a different purpose in the body Short bones are small boxy bones that are thick and strong These can be found in the wrists and ankles

Bone Shapes Long bones are longer than they are wide and have a distinct shape Their slender shape and structure is designed for the specific purpose of movement and protection of the particular area of the body These are located throughout the body

Bone Shapes Long bones have different sections The long tube of a long bone is the diaphysis The ends of the long bone expand out in the epiphysis The metaphysis connects the tube to the enlarged end

Bone Shapes Irregular bones have complex shapes that can have short, flat notched and/or ridged surfaces These bones are often varied in form and function The spinal vertebrae are excellent examples of irregular bones

Bone Shapes Sesamoid Bones are small flat and can be shaped like a sesame seed. They develop inside tendons and are associated with joints An excellent example of this is the patella inside of the patella tendon

Bone Shapes Flat bones have thin parallel surfaces These bones can be found throughout the body and come in many different sizes and shapes The bones of the skull, the ribs and the scapulae are all examples

Bone Shapes Sutural bones are small flat and irregularly shaped bones between the flat bones of the skull They are varied in width from a grain of sand to the size of a quarter The size, shape and number of these bones will change from person to person Therefore these bones are unnamed
