AP BIO DAY 8 9.19.14
2
Opener Read the Wooly Worm handout (first page only) As a table group, come up with a hypothesis You have 10 minutes. Be ready to explain what we are doing in this activity.
3
Agenda Modeling Natural Selection: Wooly Worms More Chi-Squared practice! Another opportunity to nail down your understanding of Natural Selection! Work Returned: General feedback Exemplars Work Time: Human Evolution discussion? M&M questions (DUE TODAY) Summary revisions (DUE MONDAY) Wooly Worm calculations and analysis
4
Woolly Worms The environment: the courtyard The trait: color (10 different colors=variation) The question: do different colors of worms have different levels of fitness? You: predatory birds Your tasks: find and “eat” up to FIVE worms in a one minute period Analysis: if differences are seen, are they statistically significant (i.e.: do they have a CAUSE?)?
5
General Feedback Use the Proficiency Scale Use the scientific vocabulary Natural Selection acts on existing traits Populations evolve, populations adapt. NOT individuals Short term impacts of NS: adaptation to environment, change in gene pool Long term impacts of NS: speciation Explain IN GENERAL, the use EXAMPLES to illustrate
7
Use of vocab So you were made the way you are and as the environment you live in changes you are selected and you either have high fitness and survive to pass on your genes or you have low fitness and die Populations of every species show variation in traits within the population. As the environment you live in changes you are selected and you either have high fitness and survive to pass on your genes or you have low fitness and die

General vs. Specific Explanations

Due to global warming, our glaciers are melting and plant life is being affected by the increase in heat in our environment. The blueberry species is one form of plant life that is being affected by this change in our environment. There is a variation in the trait blueberries possess on when they bloom during the season; some bloom earlier and some bloom later. With the Earth warming, the prime time for bloom is much earlier in the season than it used to be. This means that the blueberries that tend to bloom earlier than others have a higher fitness because their trait allows them to survive and bloom at the new prime time the following year.
10
This trait can be passed on to their offspring through reproduction, thus making the trait now heritable. The blueberry population will eventually adapt to the change in the environment caused by global warming to begin blooming earlier than in years past, thus meaning they have evolved through the process of natural selection to weed out the blueberries with the trait to bloom later in the season.

The blueberry species is one form of plant life that is being affected by this change in our environment. Populations of all species show variation in their traits, and what form of a trait you have can affect your fitness. Your feedback, and next steps HW: Use the feedback provided by Ziady to REVISE your writing about natural selection ALL students should do this electronically (even if you wrote by hand the first time) What I’m looking for: Evidence that you incorporated my feedback into your revised piece of writing Evidence of improved understanding of Natural Selection Done by Monday
13
Human Evolution? Questions?
14
Work Time Plant care: fill reservoirs, stake plants (see example) M&M questions (DUE TODAY) Summary revisions (DUE MONDAY) Wooly Worm calculations and analysis Unit One Exam #1 Study Guide EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE FOCUSED AND WORKING ON ONE OF THE ABOVE.
