2. Timelines are a way to understand the relationship between events and the dates they in which they took place. We are putting information into chronological order. There are a number of ways in which timelines can be displayed.

6. What do you think timelines can be used for?? Seeing when things occurred Helps plot events in order; this is useful in a court room or for an argument Seeing how our world has developed

7. To understand a story you must know what order things happened in. In the example of the ‘body in the room’ you can make up very different stories by changing the order in which things happened. You can make the story a murder, an accident or somebody discovering a body- it could be any sort of mystery. 8. Chronology is the study of when exactly things happened. When historians put events into chronological order they put them in the order that they happened. Like detectives, by placing important events in chronological order we can discover many interesting things about why events happened. 12. In order to talk about time we need to be familiar with a number of terms used to describe the measurement of time. 13. Our dating system is broken into two ‘parts’. We live in the “Common Era” this is from year 1 to the present. Older text books will refer to this as AD – Anno Domini. This refers to the years after the birth of Christ. The years before year 1 are referred to as BCE – Before Common Era. In older books this is referred to as BC- Before Christ. 14. When referring to the century of when an event occurred we often say “it happened in the 20 th Century”. Is that now because we start our year date with 20– or it is last century? The answer is: the 20 th century was in the century beginning with 19--. The rule is that if a date is referred to as a Century we minus one from the number. Eg the 18 th Century was the 1700s.
