Do Now: 1.Turn in your Pectinase Lab by passing it to your left. 2.Copy the following outline: A. Chemical Reaction: Two Types 1. 2. B. Energy in Reactions 1. _______ requires more energy than ______ 2. Enzymes work by __________ the __________ _______ required for a chemical reaction 3. Enzymes are ____________ made up of _______ _______ C. The 3 major factors affecting enzyme reaction rates are: 1. 2. 3. Energy & Enzymes
2
When atoms change how they’re bonded to each other, that’s called a chemical reaction
3
Monosaccharide CO 2 + H 2 O Chemical reactions involve energy.
4
Reactions that give off energy are exer gonic
5
Others that require energy are said to be Ender gonic
6
Monosaccharide CO 2 + H 2 O Order requires more energy than chaos
7
The Lab… The chemical reaction we will study breaks a big polysaccharide into smaller parts. Do you think it’s exergonic or endergonic? Why?
8
ENZYME SUBSTRATE
9
How Enzymes Work Enzymes reduce the amount of energy needed for a reaction to happen, making it faster.
11
Life Can Not Exist Without Enzymes Thousands of chemical reactions essential to life could not happen fast enough without enzymes. Enzymes are proteins – they do the chemical “work” of the cell.
12
Quick – What are Proteins made of?
13
Do Now Complete the illustration “Enzyme & Substrate Interaction” on the handout you picked up
14
Enzymes Are Affected by Their Environment How well an enzyme works depends on 3 main factors: –Temperature –pH –Concentration
15
The Effect of Temperature Every enzyme has an optimal temperature that it works best at.
16
Likewise for pH As you might expect, stomach enzymes work best at low pHs!
17
Concentration has an Effect Too!
18
Exit Ticket: Complete the following before you leave! 1.Would an explosion be an exergonic or endergonic reaction? Why? 2.How do enzymes make chemical reactions happen faster? 3.What are the three main factors influencing how fast enzymes work?
