Upon returning home, the community is very upset over the behavior change in the boys. The families of Piggy and Simon have filed a criminal complaint naming Jack as being responsible for their deaths. Due to the seriousness of the charges, a criminal trial has been set. The prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Jack was responsible for the deaths of Piggy and Simon. Note that Jack is not being charged with murder of the two boys. Jack’s attorney must develop a case that Jack was not responsible for the two deaths. Both the prosecution and the defense will be given five witnesses. Both sides may present one “surprise witness.”
2
The Prosecution Witnesses- Ralph, Simon’s father, Piggy’s aunt, Sam, a child psychologist One surprise witness The premise of your case is that Jack was not acting out of self-defense, instead he was acting of his own free will, with no reasonable justification for the events that led to Piggy’s death. Your case is based on the fact that humans are social, compassionate, and virtuous.

The Defense Witnesses- Jack, Roger, Jack’s mom, Jack’s favorite teacher from school, a child psychologist, one surprise witness. Jack has entered a plea of not guilt and will defend himself. His lawyer is arguing that Jack’s actions were based upon human nature and were motivated by the Darwinian principle of Survival of the Fittest. Human beings are competitive, selfish, and individualistic and they act to preserve themselves.
