Calculating Single File Sizes – Students Will – Calculate an assortment of file sizes Understand how file sizes change with content and distribution method. Demonstrate knowledge of why file data is manipulated Demonstrate proficiency with math calculations Learn industry standard aspect ratios, terms and formulas Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. 4
Calculating Single File Sizes What factors determine file size? Image Quality – The larger the file size the better quality Distribution Method – Broadcast, Stream, Download. Large files eat bandwidth Archive – How much digital (disc) space is needed to archive Bit depth and sample size (these are specific to Audio and Video files) Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. Calculating Single File Sizes - Units of Measure – To convert pixels to inches you need to know that there are 72 pixels per inch. The formula to convert pixels to inches is X/72=inches, where X is the number of pixels on a side. 720px /72 = 10 inches 480px /72= 6.6666 inches 1920px /72 = 26. 6666 inches 1080px /72 = 15 inches Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. Calculating Single File Sizes – Units of Measure – Bit – the smallest unit of data in a computer Byte = 8 bits Kilobyte (KB) = 1024 Bytes Megabyte (MB) = 1024 Kilobytes Gigabyte (GB) = 1024 Megabytes Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. All rights reserved.

Calculating Single File Sizes – Units of Measure – Conversion: Bit / 8 = Byte Byte / 1024 = Kilobyte (KB) Kilobyte (KB) / 1024 = Megabyte (MB) Megabyte (MB) / 1024 = Gigabyte (GB) Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. All rights reserved.

Calculating Single File Sizes – Definitions – DPI – Dots Per Inch – used mostly in print. This refers to the resolution of the printed page. Sample Rate – The number of times a digital converter samples the analogue source. Example: Audio - 44.1 kHZ, Video – 4:2:2 (color and luminance) Image – 3 bit RGB Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. All rights reserved.

Calculating Single File Sizes – Formula – L x W x 3 (RGB Bytes) Step 1 SD – 720px x 480px x 3 = 1,036,800 bytes (of information) HD – 1920px x 1080px x 3 = 6,220,800 bytes (of information) Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. All rights reserved.

Calculating Single File Sizes – Formula – Step 2 Convert SD: 1,036,800 / 1024 = 1,012.5 Kilobytes (KB) 1,036,800 / (1024 x 1024) =.9887695 Megabytes (MB) 1,036,800/ (1024 x 1024 x 1024) =.0009655 Gigabytes (GB) Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. All rights reserved.

Calculating Single File Sizes – Formula – Step 2 Convert HD: 6,220,800 / 1024 = 6,075 Kilobytes (KB) 6,220,800 / (1024 x 1024) = 5.932 Megabytes (MB) 6,220,800 / (1024 x 1024 x 1024) =.00579 Gigabytes (GB) Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. All rights reserved.
