Types of Violence Assault & Homicide Assault is an unlawful attack on a person with the intent to harm or kill Random violence is committed for no particular reason Homicide is the willful killing of one human being by another

Types of Violence Sexual Violence Sexual violence is any form of unwelcome sexual conduct directed at an individual, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape Sexual assault is any intentional sexual attack against another person Rape is any form of sexual intercourse that takes place against a person’s will

Gang-Related Violence Drug sales Physical Assault Homicide Joining a gang increases the risk of being arrested, hurt, or killed

Abuse Abuse is the physical, mental/emotional, or sexual mistreatment of one person by another Physical abuse is the intentional infliction of bodily harm or injury on another person Verbal abuse is using words to mistreat or injure another person and harms emotional health Stalking is the repeated following, harassment, or threatening of an individual to frighten or cause him or her harm

Dating Violence Dating violence is abuse in dating relationships It can be physical, emotional, and sexual Signs of unhealthy dating relationships: 1. Jealously 2. Controlling 3. Insults and Put-Downs 4. Use of guilt for manipulation

Date and Acquaintance Rape Date rape occurs when one person in a dating relationship forces the other person to participate in sexual intercourse Acquaintance rape occurs when someone known casually forces a person to have sexual intercourse

Overcoming Abuse All incidents of abuse should be reported to authorities Victims of rape should: 1. Call law enforcement 2. Get medical attention 3. Speak with a caring and trusted adult Victims of child abuse should seek counseling
