Hydrogen as a Renewable Energy Alternative Jeffery Duncan Miranda Svirk

How does it work? 2H 2 + O 2 – > 2H 2 O Hydrogen is combustible. When reacting with oxygen, it is three times as combustible than combustion with petrol.

How? The three most common ways of extracting hydrogen are steam reforming, electrolysis, and thermolysis. Can be used as a combustible or can be used in a fuel cell to produce electricity.

Energy efficiency ratio Average of 50% When comparing hydrogen and gasoline powered cars, this ratio compares well considering the fact that regular cars lose around 62% of their fuel energy just to wasted heat.

Where is this most likely to be used? Currently, japan is where hydrogen energy would be most likely used because of the hydrogen powered vehicle. Generous government subsidies make purchasing hydrogen cars in Japan very cheap.

Problems with the use of Hydrogen as an alternative fuel source Hydrogen is tough to transport and can destroy or weaken metals. A more uncommon means of containment during transport would need to be explored in order to control this downside. Hydrogen has a low density at room temperature and pressure, making it difficult to contain. This minor setback can be solved by squeezing the gas into a denser form.

Advantages and disadvantages AdvantagesDisadvantages Readily available No harmful emissions Environmentally friendly Fuel efficient Renewable Expensive Difficult to store Currently no easy public access/infrastructure for hydrogen Highly flammable Fossil fuels are most commonly used for extracting Hydrogen
