2
Geography The Flathead tribe was located in Plateau region of North America. The Plateau region consists of mountains, grasslands, and wooded areas. The Plateau region is bordered on the left by the Rocky Mountains.
3
Climate The Climate in the Plateau region had a very wide variety throughout the year. The region had harsh winters with lows of -30 degrees and highs in the summer up to 100 degrees. There would be snow fall in the Rocky Mountain range throughout the year due to its high altitude.
4
Resources The Flathead tribe had access to wooded areas throughout there land. The Flatheads loved to use bark in there clothes, and houses so they used the environment around them to there advantage. The Flatheads didn’t have much room for crops so instead they took up hunting for resources.
5
Shelter The Flatheads would stay in villages in the winter time, then for the rest of the year the would divide into camps to hunt and gather. Some of the tribe members would become nomads and travel in small groups. The houses were teepees made out of wood from the woodlands and wool from the wild game game.

Food Relied on wild foods from the surrounding areas
Due to the many lakes and streams throughout the mountains and wooded areas the Flatheads could fish for many different types of fish like bull trout and largemouth bass. The Flatheads also had access to a wide variety of wild game like Elk, White- tailed Deer, Moose, and Mule Deer.

Clothing The Flathead tribe wore bark breechcloth or apron with a twisted bark poncho. In the winter the Flatheads would wear furs to protect themselves from the extreme low temperatures. The Flatheads would wear ceremonial headbands and feathers into battle to show there bravery and rank in there tribe.

Social Organization The Flathead tribe had slaves to suit there owners wishes. These slaves usually came from opposing tribes. The Flatheads weren’t to strict about marriage in the village. In fact Marriage and Divorce was often informal and happened often. The Flatheads stuck to traditions about a boy becoming a man by sending him to a mountain top in hopes of finding a guardian spirit. When a girl became a woman she was sent far away from the village to a shelter and she was viewed as extremely powerful in the spiritual senses.
13
Political organization
The Flathead would have a head chief of great power and band chiefs under him. The head chief handled matters of peace and war and was not bound by the members of his council. The chiefs and their families played a prominent role in promoting traditional values. If a tribe member disagreed with a chiefs decision that person and his/her family would simply move to another village. This happened frequently.

Religion Shamanism- A religion where people believe in a shaman to act as an intermediary between them and spirits of ancestors and nature itself. Often incorporates animal totems and mound building that are often included in the native american stereotype. Details tend to vary from tribe to tribe and even shaman to shaman.
16
Trade All goods traveled through an inter-tribe gathering at the Dalles, or Celilo Falls. Southern tribes traded stone pipes, tobacco, and furs to the North for feathers, fish, clothing and horses.
17
Customs The name is deceiving but the Flatheads never practiced the flattening of ones head. Neighboring tribes would shape the front of there head to create a pointed appearance and because of this the Flathead tribe appeared to have a flat head compared to the other tribes. The Flathead tribe spoke the Kalispel language along with the Pend d'Oreilles tribe.
