2 Learning objectives In this lesson we will: Refresh and consolidate our knowledge of ecosystem and the components that make up an ecosystem. Understand and be able to recognize an animal habitat. what makes up a habitat and how animals adapt to a habitat? Understand what are some of the Australian habits like and how animals adapt to these habitats.

6 Habitats Where a plant or animal lives is called its habitat.

7 Habitat A habitat provides an animal with two important things: 1.Food/water 2.Shelter It is a safe place to reproduce and it is ideally protected. A frog in its habitat – the pond. Food to eat – water to spawn – damp air so not to dry out.

8 Where do we live? As humans, we are able to live all over the world; in the most adverse conditions. We are able to adapt to our environment – however hostile – as we design clothes and shelter to suit the surrounding area. This protects us from the weather and animals that may be harmful to us.

9 Questions: What do birds need to thrive? 1.Feathers must be camouflaged from predators. 2.Lots of food, such as worms, in abundance. 3.Plenty of materials, such as twigs, to build good nests for their young.

10 Questions Where might you find frogs? What environment would suit a camel? What should Zookeepers do to ensure that an animal, out of its natural environment, stays healthy? How would you make a penguin feel at home in a artificial environment such as a zoo? Describe the habitat of: a) A Polar bear b) a crocodile c) a lion d) an elephante) a camel.

11 A little project for you Design a habitat for black-footed ferret 1. Watch slides on the projector and design a habitat for black-footed ferret. http://www.arkive.org/education/games/design-a- habitat 2. Summarize the slides you watched: 1). When talking about HABITAT, what things did Sir Chumbley talk about? E.g. He talked about what type of land/place black-footed ferret usually lived on. (answer: grassland.) 2). To summarize, what is the relationship between black footed ferret and its habitat.

13 Task - Demonstrate a habit for an Australian animal: Due Monday 18 th November Choose an Australian animal and do some research on its habitat and find out how this animal adapts to this habitat? Record your research results and write them down. Suggestion: your report can have the similar structure as those in the slides, covering the points in the previous list.
