Animal Adaptations Kelly Powell Teacher PageStudent Page
2
Introduction Many animals adapt to survive in their habitats. Today you will be researching many different animals and placing them into correct habitats.
3
Task You are a zoologist working for the Atlanta zoo. Your job is to match animals into habitats based on their adaptations. http://www.uen.org/utahlink/activities/vie w_activity.cgi?activity_id=3792 http://www.uen.org/utahlink/activities/vie w_activity.cgi?activity_id=3792
4
Process Choose 1 habitat from the following list: Wetlands/swamp/river Ocean Mountain Forest Find five animals to that would survive in your habitat. Draw your habitat on a blank sheet of paper. After researching, draw five animals that fit into your habitat. On the back of your paper, write one sentence for each animal, explaining why it should live in that habitat.
5
Evaluation Survival Expert (50 pts) Animal Explorer (30 pts) Lost in the forest (10 pts) You chose five animals for your paper that could survive in your habitat. You chose three animals for your paper that could survive in your habitat. One or more of your choices did not fit. None of your animal could survive in the habitat you chose. You defended your choices well, by using “because” statements and using your knowledge of adaptations. You defended your choices well, by using “because” statements You did not defend your choices.
6
Conclusion Great work class! You have been hired! Continue to study animals and research to be the best zoologist you can be!
7
Credits Special thanks to: – My students who inspire me to be a better teacher! – Dr. Coffey and Ms. Viers for instructing me on WebQuests. – Fab Five who all work so well together! – Jared, who puts up with so much!
8
Introduction This WebQuest is based on assessing students knowledge of adaptations and allow them to apply that knowledge while introducing habitats. – Pass out a sheet of white paper for students to sketch out their habitat. They will then draw 5 animals into the habitat. – On the back of the paper, they will write a sentence explaining why each animal belongs in that habitat.
9
Learners Students will explore animal features and habitats to choose which animals are best suited for their environment.
10
Standards S3L1. Students will investigate the habitats of different organisms and the dependence of organisms on their habitat. – a. Differentiate between habitats of Georgia (mountains, marsh/swamp, coast, Piedmont, Atlantic Ocean) and the organisms that live there. – b. Identify features of green plants that allow them to live and thrive in different regions of Georgia. – c. Identify features of animals that allow them to live and thrive in different regions of Georgia. – d. Explain what will happen to an organism if the habitat is changed.
11
Process After studying animal adaptations and ways of survival, students will place them into proper environments. This WebQuest should take two 40 minute periods.
