1 Unit: Forest plant Identification Lesson: Silvics Objective: Students will understand forestry silvicultural practices 1)What is silvics? 2)What are some silvical characteristics? Explain each - Shade Tolerance - Site and Moisture requirements - Rate of growth and longevity 3) What are some silvical characteristics of common trees in Missouri?

2 Shade tolerance- the ability of a tree to grow in the shade Under story- refers to trees that grow under the taller trees or dominant trees. * dominant above the general forest canopy * co-dominant make up the forest canopy * under story or overtopped below the canopy Trees are called “Tolerant” because they are able to survive and thrive without full sunlight Trees are called “intolerant” require full sunlight

3 Site and moisture requirements Moisture is the most limiting element of all the environment factors on tree growth Rate of growth and longevity Fast growing trees will quickly overtop competing trees If the overtopped trees are of an intolerant species they will die off

4 Silvical characteristics of common Missouri Trees Oaks and hickories are intolerant grow to be big Bald cypress like wet sites Flowering dogwood, Eastern redbud, Sassafras are tolerant under story trees * Sycamore- tolerant to industrial fumes
