Fertilization Haploid sperm fuses with haploid ovum egg to produce diploid zygote- oviduct Meiosis II occurs in egg with fertilization Zygote develops into embryo Embryo takes several days until it implants into the endometrial wall of uterus Endometrium should be thick, blood vessel rich and secretory

Placenta Nutrient sack attached to endometrial wall Connected to fetus through umbilical cord Nutrients/ waste/ gas exchange through cord

Placenta Placenta produces HCG- Human chorionic gonadotropin Hormone HCG tells the Corpus Luteum to keep producing estrogen and progesterone Placenta secretes its own E & P at 3 months

Delivery- Oxytocin Fetus puts pressure on the cervix Cervix sends neural signal to posterior pituitary to release oxytocin (produced in the hypothalamus) Oxytocin travels in blood to myometrium Myometrium contracts, pushes fetus Fetus puts more pressure on cervix Cervix sends another message to Pos Pit
