3 Two Competing Models of Criminal Justice Two opposing points of view One focuses on individual rights at any cost – & One that suggests under certain circumstances involving criminal threats to public safety, the interests of society as a whole take precedence over individual rights

4 Two Competing Models of Criminal Justice Individual rights – Emphasis on individual, civil & criminal rights – Emphasizes some guilty offenders will be found innocent to reduce likelihood of convicting an innocent person – Sometimes necessary to sacrifice some degree of public safety in order to guarantee basic personal freedoms – Advocates limited police powers with the highest evidentiary standard possible
