PURPOSES: Improve our school through increasing communication between the students and staff HELP students IMPROVE their grades and overall student achievement Engage students on reflecting on their goals and efforts Allow time for students to request assistance if they need it Increase pride in our school by thanking those that help us.

4. SPARTAN BUCKS You want them…we got them. Every month we will target a behavior that we would like to see in our students. It is up to each individual teacher… You will be creating something today. If you share with your teacher, then they MAY give you a Spartan Buck.

5. YOUR SMART GOALS In the last session you wrote down ACADEMIC SMART goals. Teachers, please pass back SMART goals and blank copies to new students. (New students please read directions and begin completing) Also, pass out the ACADEMIC Reflection sheet

6. We want to know what you think… 5-6 minutes individual reflection time Please answer the following question on your Academic Reflection sheet 1. What do you like most about school? (Besides talking with friends) 2. What area do you feel Fitzgerald needs more support or could improve? (Besides the cafeteria food) Explain why. Please answer the follow questions. Looking at your SMART Goal sheet… 1. Have your done the things you said you were going to do since the day you wrote your SMART goal? 2. Explain WHY or WHY NOT. 3. What still needs to be done to meet this goal?

7. DISCUSSION Please discuss student responses that would like to share on previous questions.

8. “GAME TIME” Stand up next to your chair/desk Hold out one of your hands (flatly with fingers together) Take a pen/pencil and place it on top of your flat hand. Now without using your other hand TRY to catch the pen or pencil (one handed). Can you do 1 or more pens/pencils? 2? 3? Take turns with someone else if you don’t have a pen/pencil How many times can you do it in a minute?

9. PERSISTENCE Persistence: the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people So, if you didn’t succeed the first time at catching the pencil…did you try again and again. THAT is PERSISTANCE…NOT GIVING UP! So, if you didn’t reach your SMART GOAL…PERSIST…Don’t GIVE UP! OR Challenge yourself even more!!!

10. FINAL EXAMS are coming up! It is time to STUDY!!! Today, we’re going to give you some study tips. By completing this activity (taking notes) and creating an ACRONYM for one of your classes you will be eligible to receive a Spartan Buck from your teachers that choose to participate. You will need to show the activity to them with an acronym that can work for that class.

Time: –The brain needs time to hold on to new information. –It’s better to learn small bits over a long period of time than to try to cram in lots of information on the night before a test. –You will remember more if you study for 20 – 25 minutes, take a short break and then study again than if you cram for two hours straight.
