Identifying Minerals 11/17/15 3-2 pgs. 64-67 IN: Explain why each of the following is not considered a mineral: a cupcake, water, oxygen, and bones. Put your DRW on the box
2
What is a mineral? 1. Formed in nature 2. Solid 3. Nonliving 4. Has a crystalline structure
3
Identifying Minerals How would you know if these minerals are the same?
4
Properties of Minerals Color Luster Streak Cleavage and Fracture Hardness Density Special Properties
5
Color The same mineral can come in different colors. Impurities Quartz-white, red, pink, and purple Weathering Pyrite turns black Color is not a very reliable indicator of a mineral’s identity.
6
Luster The way a surface reflects light. There are 3 types: 1. Metallic 2. Submetallic 3. Nonmetallic
7
Metallic Luster Looks shiny, like metal.
8
Nonmetallic Luster Does not look shiny.
9
Submetallic Has properties of both metallic and nonmetallic.
10
Streak The color of a mineral in a powdered form. The color of a mineral is not always the color of its streak.
11
Streak A minerals streak is not affected by weathering. Therefore, a mineral’s streak is much more reliable than its color.
12
Cleavage The tendency of some minerals to break along flat surfaces.
13
Cleavage
14
Fracture The tendency of some minerals to break unevenly along curved or irregular surfaces.
15
Hardness A mineral’s resistance to being scratched.
16
Density The measure of how much matter there is in a given amount of space.
17
Special Properties Properties that are particular to only a few types of minerals.
18
Special Properties Fluorescence
19
Chemical Reaction Calcite will “fizz” with acid
20
Optical Properties
21
Radioactivity Uranium
22
Magnetism Magnetite
23
Taste Halite Tastes “salty”
24
Smell Sulfur Smells like “rotten eggs”
